Who is Ars Musica Australis?

The mission of AMA is to cultivate the great artistic talent of Australians and provide guidance and pathways for young artists to develop and excel.

It all started when…

Ars Musica Australis (AMA) is a not-for-profit community-based arts organisation which is dedicated to the encouragement and financial support of talented young Australians involved in artistic and cultural disciplines.

AMA is focused on assisting highly talented, and often underprivileged, young people to achieve excellence in music performance, composition, music therapy, dance, visual arts and community cultural development.

AMA has funded the participation of young musicians in orchestras and opera schools overseas, of early career dancers in academies in Australia and abroad, and the commissioning of musical compositions by Australian composers as well as the development of music and arts workshops for young people not otherwise in contact with the creative arts. AMA has also provided thousands of school children, particularly from Western Sydney, with access to theatre, dance and music performances through the provision of subsidised tickets.

Since its formation in 1996, AMA has provided fellowships to over 200 artists in a wide range of creative pursuits. AMA has always had a special commitment to classically trained performers, however, in recent times, it has expanded its support to other creative disciplines.

The commissioning of new musical compositions has been at the heart of AMA since its formation. It has been responsible for the commissioning of over 150 new compositions, by both leading and emerging composers, both in Australia and overseas.

Any young Australian (a citizen under the age of 30) is eligible to apply for an AMA Fellowship, with special preference for applicants with limited financial support.

AMA objectives now encompass:

  • Providing ongoing fellowships

  • Sponsoring arts-related special projects

  • Programming concerts, performances and exhibitions

  • Commissioning and promoting new music and composers
